Coming Into Agreement With God’s Word

Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Amos 3:3

What is a covenant? A covenant is a sacred, formal agreement between two or more parties. God desires for us, His children, to align ourselves with the promises He made long before our existence.

Our God is a covenant-keeping God, and we must agree with His word regarding us and our household. Take the life of Abraham, for example. God said to him in Genesis 17:1-2, “I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect, and I will make my covenant between me and thee and will multiply thee exceedingly”. In verse 9 of the same chapter, God said to Abraham, “You also must agree to keep the covenant with me, both you and your descendants in future generations.

Covenants like this were not only for Abraham and the people in the Bible. It is also for us with faith. Abraham, through faith, was accepted as righteous by God (Romans 4:22). The Bible tells us in Romans 4:24 that “being accepted as righteous” was not written for him (Abraham) alone but also for us who are to be accepted as righteous, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from death.

There was a confidence that Abraham had that even when his situation did not look like what God was speaking, he remained there and kept his side of the agreement. It pays to abide in the LORD. Proverbs 14:26 declares, “In the fear of the LORD, one has strong confidence, and his children will have refuge.”

A deep sense of unwavering confidence grows within us when we remain in the presence of the Lord. In this place of abiding, He prunes us, we adopt the mind of Christ, and we find ourselves free from fear. In God’s presence, He strengthens us to walk in the power and authority we already possess in Jesus’ name. Regardless of the challenges we face, personal trials or the circumstances our children may encounter, God calls us to remain rooted in Him, declaring His promises over our lives and families.

When we do, we will undoubtedly experience the goodness and protection of the Lord. Abraham, Job, Moses, David, and the rest of them knew a thing or two about remaining in the presence of the Most High God, especially in the face of Goliaths and Pharoahs. Even the devil knows that when children of God abide in the presence of God, they begin to walk in His power and authority and become a threat to his kingdom. We need to know this, too.

I want to share a testimony to encourage a parent today that God indeed keeps His promises with you and your generation. My son and I learned invaluable lessons from a harrowing experience, and I am eternally grateful to God for protecting him and his friend when things could have turned out far worse.

In December 2024, my son and a friend were walking home from school when a car suddenly stopped in front of them, and a group of older boys (about five in total) jumped out. Four of them attacked my son, knocking him down and forcibly taking his shoes while others pointed what looked like guns at his side. One decided he would also take his jacket but couldn’t take it off because my son had his backpack on, and the driver was rushing them since they had started attracting other cars. Shaken, but unharmed, my son walked home in freezing cold temperatures, wearing only socks.

That evening, as my son reflected on the events, he remembered a conversation he’d had earlier that day with a boy in his band class. This boy had shared the gospel with him and his friend, encouraging them to repent, read scripture, and live by God’s Word. Afterward, they prayed together, and the boy asked my son to read the books of John and Romans. Interestingly, my son had never seen this boy before that day and had not seen him again after that day.

I was in awe as I listened to my son recount the encounter. I wondered: Who was this boy? Was he a messenger from God or perhaps even a guardian angel? Why did my son, although startled, remained unafraid and determined to continue to walk home from school?

Reflecting on this, I am reminded of the countless dangers that God shields us from every day. If God were to open our eyes to see the many unseen dangers He protects us from, we would be overwhelmed with gratitude. This incident only heightened my awareness of God’s constant presence and protection over our lives. It is a testament to His faithfulness, and I pray it encourages anyone reading this today.

The Bible offers many promises for us, our children, and future generations. We must align ourselves with these promises, pray confidently, and trust God’s faithfulness. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that “without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” We must pray with faith and trust God.

Here are just a few of the many promises God has made to us and our children:

  1. All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their peace – Isaiah 54:13
  • He (God) strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you. He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat – Psalm 147:13-14
  • “As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord – Isaiah 59:21
  • “The children of your servants will live in your presence; their descendants will be established before you.”- Psalm 102:28 NIV
  • Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed – Psalm 112:1-2
  • For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams. Some will say, ‘I belong to the Lord’; others will call themselves by the name of Jacob; still others will write on their hand, ‘The Lord’s,’ and will take the name Israel – Isaiah 44:3-5. This one gave me goosebumps. Declare it as a parent, “my children will say they belong to the LORD. Some will take on the name Israel. Some, Jacob, and some will write on their hands, “I am the LORDs”. Because the LORD will pour His Spirit on our offsprings, they will know and declare themselves that they are the LORDs. That is amazing!
  • In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”- Isaiah 61:8-9
  • They will not labor in vain, nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the Lord, they and their descendants with them – Isaiah 65:23
  • Closing out with this verse in Jeremiah 32:39, the LORD says, “and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may [reverently] fear Me forever, for their own good and for the good of their children after them.

God is so amazing, and He is always on our side. Nothing we do can change His nature or His promises to us. His will is always for our good. In our weakness, He is faithful to keep us on track, and that’s why He promises to give us new hearts, new purposes, and the strength to seek Him on behalf of our families.

I pray for you. May the LORD give you a new heart to serve Him and be upright before Him. May He bless and keep you; may the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; may the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Amen

I love you all.
